All of our Sonida Senior Living communities across the country have one goal in mind – and that is to provide quality senior housing and outstanding services while improving the quality of life for the seniors we serve. Get to know our communities a little bit more through our Community Spotlight blog series!
Our next community spotlight is The Woodlands of Shaker Heights, located just outside of Cleveland, Ohio. The Woodlands of Shaker Heights is an assisted living and memory care community that also offers temporary stay.
What makes The Woodlands of Shaker Heights unique?
As the Executive Director puts it, “The Woodlands of Shaker Heights is unique because it’s small, cozy and feels like home. We are a down-to-earth community filled with joy and good people.”
Music is a special part of The Woodlands of Shaker Heights. “We have a good time here with music and laughter, both residents and staff alike. The sound of residents and team members singing songs of praise is frequently heard at our community.”
Services and amenities available at The Woodlands of Shaker Heights
The Woodlands of Shaker Heights has plenty of amenities for residents to enjoy. This includes the activities room, solarium, family/TV room, on-site salon, gardens and walking paths surrounding the property, book nook and bistro.
The bistro is quite popular among residents because it has an old-fashioned jukebox where they have happy hour every Friday, ice cream socials and small parties.
Speaking of food, “dining here is like eating at your grandma’s house,” the director says. “We’re famous for our barbecue ribs, greens, mac-n-cheese, red beans and rice, and cornbread. We also have fresh-baked bread in the mornings that fills the air with amazing aromas.”

Activities to keep seniors engaged
The staff at The Woodlands of Shaker Heights bend over backward for their residents, going above and beyond to make sure they are taken care of and happy.
The staff also makes sure the residents have fun activities to partake in. These activities usually include movie weekends, crafts, bingo, and morning exercises that can be done by residents of all abilities.
“One favorite activity is group drives through Cleveland,” the director says. “Our Activities Director talks with the residents about where they want to go or what they want to drive by, like residents’ old neighborhoods, places of work or church. Residents like to talk about the history while they’re driving by. They enjoy sitting in a group and listening to each other’s stories from the past.”
The Woodlands of Shaker Heights has a diverse group of residents with unique cultures and backgrounds. An annual tradition of theirs is celebrating Black History Month every February with an extensive collection of Black History artifacts and memorabilia.
