Q&A with Mira
Q: Could you introduce yourself and tell us about your role at Keystone Woods?
A: I’m Mira, and I’m the Housekeeping Supervisor at Keystone Woods.
Q: How did you begin housekeeping in an assisted living community?
A: A friend of mine told me about the community needing a Housekeeper, and nine years later, here I am.
Q: What do you find most rewarding about your job?
A: I’ve always loved working with seniors. I was already doing housekeeping for seniors at home, and when I came here, I just fell in love with the atmosphere.
Q: So, when you first came in as a Housekeeper, tell me what happened next.
A: Over the years, I’ve worked in housekeeping, maintenance, dining—everywhere.
Q: Sounds like you help out wherever you can!
A: I do, we all do.
Q: What about Keystone Woods residents is special?
A: They all have different stories, histories, lifestyles and cultures. I enjoy hearing their stories.
Q: Can you tell me about a resident who comes to mind?
A: We had a lady years ago who was from Germany. She had been through the Holocaust as a child, and it was really fascinating to hear her stories.
Q: It sounds like Keystone Woods is quite the community.
A: We are. We care about each other. I was sick recently, so our Activities Director loaded up the community bus with residents and some of the team, and they showed up to my house bringing me flowers and a big balloon. I couldn’t go outside because I was contagious, but we waved to one another and blew kisses. It was awesome.
Q: That is incredibly sweet.
A: It was so awesome to see.
Q: What about your team? Can you tell me about the Keystone Woods team?
A: We have a great team. Everybody works together. If they need help in the kitchen, I’ll go help. If I have a resident who asks me to come back to their room later and check on something, I’ll go back and check. I jump in anywhere without a problem—we all do. If you work together, you can accomplish anything.
Q: What are your senior living community housekeeping duties as a supervisor?
A: Staff management, training and development, really, I am wherever I am needed!
Q: What would you say to someone considering a career in senior living?
A: It’s hard, but if you have a lot of compassion, you’ll do great.
Q: What part of your job brings you joy?
A: When the residents thank me and tell me what a nice job I’ve done. I’ve even been told by my own family doctor, who became a resident, “You know, I’ve never been in such a clean building.” That really makes me happy. It brings joy knowing I can make them smile.
Q: What’s life like outside of the community?
A: I have a bunch of grandchildren and great-grandkids. We love to get together and go camping and canoeing.
Q: Where do you go camping in Indiana?
A: We go everywhere. We go to Turkey Run or Brookville in Indiana, and sometimes we go as far as Tennessee. It’s all about being together, no matter where.
Q: Other than camping, what else do you do outside the community?
A: I help seniors in my downtime. I’ll do anything to help, even mow their lawns.
Q: It sounds like one of your great passions in life is helping others.
A: It’s true. And I think every resident here knows I love them.

Is Senior Living the Same as Assisted Living?
The term “senior living community” encompasses a variety of different senior communities including independent living, assisted living, memory care, retirement communities and nursing homes. Assisted living is the kind of senior living that provides a higher level of care not available in an independent living community, such as health care assistance and personalized care plans.
