We all know pets play an important role in our families. They provide companionship and often give us structure in our daily routine that may be missing. According to a 2018 poll sponsored by AARP and the University of Michigan, 79% of senior pet owners said their four-legged (or feathered, or finned) friends reduced stress.
This study is one of the many reasons why here at Sonida Senior Living, most of our communities allow small pets.
Below are some common questions about pets in our senior living facilities.
What pets are allowed?
Cats, dogs and birds are acceptable pets in most of our communities. Certain breeds are not permitted. This is dependent on the community, so make sure to ask before moving in.
Some communities only allow one pet, while others allow up to two pets per owner. Other stipulations include the animal being 40 pounds or lighter, along with having a veterinarian record on file with up-to-date vaccinations.
Are there specific rules the pet needs to follow?
Yes. Pets must be well-behaved, on a leash at all times in public areas of the community, and are not permitted in areas where food is served. Pet owners must be considerate of other residents. In some communities, pet owners need to be living on the first floor.
Is there an extra cost to having a pet live with me?
Yes. The deposit amount varies by community and is usually a one-time fee. Some communities also charge monthly fees.
For instance, at The Waterford on Highland Colony in Ridgeland, Mississippi, there is a $500 one-time, non-refundable deposit. At Summit Point in Macedonia, Ohio, the one-time deposit is $750.
What happens if I am not able to care for my pet anymore?
In a case where the owner is physically or mentally unable to care for their pet, it is up to the resident or their family to provide care for the animal. Additional options can include the owner hiring an outside agency to care for the pet or having a family member take ownership of the animal.
