A Life Well Lived

Harry's military portrait

Harry’s story begins in 1935 in Ashland, WI, on the shores of Lake Superior, before he moved to De Pere, WI, where he grew up. After high school, Harry joined the military, serving in Korea for 18 months during the ceasefire. Following his military service, he worked in a variety of jobs, including driving trucks, before finding his calling as the general manager of a kitchen cabinet company, where he spent much of his career.

It was soon after returning from Korea that Harry met Marie, and in May 2024, they celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary—a milestone that reflects their enduring love and companionship.

Finding Home at Brookview Meadows

Harry has had a longstanding connection to our community. Over 20 years ago, when the building first opened, Harry and Marie attended the open house. At the time, they weren’t looking for a new place to live but wanted to support their neighbor, who was performing in a polka band at the event.

Harry remembers thinking Brookview Meadows was a “top-notch place.” When the time came to look for a place of their own, they visited two properties in the area, but it was Brookview Meadows that felt like home. They decided to move in, and Harry’s love for the community has only grown since then.

A Knitter by Accident

One of the most delightful parts of Harry’s story is his unexpected talent for knitting. About 40 years ago, Harry drove Marie to a knitting class, intending only to enjoy a cup of coffee while she attended. However, the instructor had other plans. She insisted Harry either participate or leave. Reluctantly, he joined in, and the instructor cast on 12 stitches, teaching him how to knit. From that moment, Harry was hooked.

Harry went on to teach himself how to knit afghans, and he’s been knitting ever since. He credits knitting with improving the dexterity of his hands and fingers, and he’s gifted each of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren an afghan over the years. He even keeps a photo album of the recipients with their gifts.

Occasionally, he will knit the same pattern more than once, but he always includes a mistake in each piece—a lesson he learned from an Amish quilting studio he and Marie visited. The Amish women explained that they intentionally make one mistake in their quilts, believing that nothing and no one is perfect.
